Sheila Oliver Sworn in as New Jersey’s First Black Lieutenant Governor

Democrat Phil Murphy was sworn in Tuesday as New Jersey’s 56th governor. He succeeds two-term Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

Former Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver was also sworn in Tuesday. She replaces Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.

Lt. Gov. Oliver becomes the state’s first Black lieutenant governor. She will head the state’s Department of Community Affairs and will serve as acting governor whenever Murphy is out of state. She is now the second highest-ranking official in New Jersey.

Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s first full day on the job will include a Cabinet meeting and an executive order signing event.

Murphy is scheduled to meet with his Cabinet, most of which has not been confirmed yet, in Trenton on Wednesday.
