The wrecking crew came again Monday to flatten another church to make way for a new Atlanta Falcons stadium with a retractable roof.
Workmen began demolishing Friendship Baptist Church three months after they had torn down Mount Vernon Baptist Church to clear land for the stadium to replace the Georgia Dome. Both churches had been fixtures for years at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and Northside drives.
The crews spent weeks removing asbestos, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The 152-year-old church had its last service on the site in between MLK and Mitchell Street on May 25 after accepting $19.5 million from the Falcons last year. The church is buying part of the Morris Brown College property in Vine City to rebuild and is holding services at nearby Morehouse College until that deal is finalized and construction is finished.
